YA and Children's reading lists... long overdue

Not having Internet access at home really sucks!!! ARRRGHHHH!!!

Now that I got that off my chest, I present to you my completely incomplete list of books for children and young adults.  I know I am leaving a ton of great books off the lists.  I know there are hundreds of wonderful stroies I have yet to read.  So far, this is what I've got:

Young Adult Books Shannon Says You Should Read

A Separate Peace (John Knowles)
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
The Lord of the Flies (William Golding)
The Westing Game (Ellen Raskin)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (Ray Bradbury)
Wild Magic (Tamora Pierce)
Beauty (Robin McKinley)
His Dark Materials Trilogy (Philip Pullman)
The Abhorsen Trilogy (Garth Nix)
Little Women (Louisa May Alcott)
Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret? (Blume)
My Side of the Mountain (George)

Children's Books Everyone Should Have on Their Shelves (IMHO)

The Witches (Dahl)
Matilda (Dahl)
The Harry Potter series (Rowling)
Charlotte's Web (E.B. White)
Island of the Blue Dolphins (O'Dell)
The Cay (Taylor)
Artemis Fowl (Colfer)
The Bridge to Terabithia (Paterson)
The Little Princess (Burnett)
Bunicula (Howe)
Because of Winn Dixie (DiCamillo)
Ella Enchanted (Levine)

So what am I missing?  What needs to be added?  Which books did you love as a kid, or love for your kids?

Wonderful list, Shannon!

I loved Jane Emily by Patricia Clapp, did you ever read? Very gothic and scary, but wonderful.

I also loved Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt. I also loved The Man Without a Face by Isabelle Holland. I also adored the Gemma Doyle series by Libba Bray, brilliantly written and perfectly set in the Victorian era.

A Separate Peace...*sigh*...loved that one. It's so nice to see it on someone's list of recommendations. :)

Dicey's song was good too, Kati. Totally forgot about that one!

Call of the Wild
Robinson Crusoe
Black Beauty
The Borrowers
Fairy tales -- lots and lots of them, Grimm's, Anderson's
Good collection of mythology-- greek, roman, norse, others...

... wish I could remember more.

The Trixie Belden series

Nancy Drew

The Little House books

I could think of a bazillion more, but these are the ones that popped immediately into my head. :)

Children's Books:
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Gatherer Blue by Lois Lowry
The Messenger by Lois Lowry
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate Dicamillo

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Holes by Louis Sachar

Click HERE for some inspiration! I saw a bunch there that I forgot to list...

Young Adult:
I second Kati's rec on the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray. Good stuff ... although I haven't yet read the last book.

I'm going to start The Theif by Megan Whalen Turner ... the first in a highly recommended YA series. Also a Newberry Honor book.

Other great YA authors are Patricia Reilly Giff, Shannon Hale, Richard Peck, Sharon Creech ...

I would add the Narnia series as well as A Wrinkle In Time by L'Engle. Two books that blew my mind as a kid.

Great list! I would add the following:

Where the Wild Things Are

Dr. Suess (any and all)

Shel Silverstein (although someone already added The Giving Tree)

Once and Future King by EB White

great list, I recently read Ella Enchanted and really enjoyed it.
Little Women is one of my favorites. My son read Bunicula and liked it!
